SUFFOLK, Va. – Jordan Cleveland &uot;JC&uot; Brown Jr., a native of Northampton County, died June 24, 2003.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. Harrell & Hill Funeral Home is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, VA 23439.

Brown was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and the Isaac Walton League. He was a retired meat cutter.

Survivors include his wife, Josie Davis Brown; two daughters, Wanda Brown Wyatt of Downey, Calif., and Betty Brown Schnur of Suffolk; two sons, Parker L. Davis of Roanoke Rapids and William &uot;Tim&uot; Brown of Suffolk; a sister, Nancy Brown Blalock of Richmond; three brothers, C. Holland Brown and Collin Brown, both of Franklin and Richard Brown of Kinston; and a grandson.

Samuel G. Lashley

BRANCHVILLE, Va. – Samuel G. Lashley, 73, a native of Southampton County, died June 21, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Rising Star Baptist Church by the Rev. Willie Dickens. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Professional services provided by Entrusting Hands Funeral Home, Boykins.

Lashley retired from Burns Security Services in Port Norris, N.J. He was a member of the Rising Star Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Helen Rogers of Portsmouth, Carolyn Lashley of Norfolk, Christine Newsome of Franklin, Sadie Montgomery of Suffolk and Mary Lashley of Como; one son, Samuel Lashley of Corapeake; three sisters, Alberta Ford of Emporia, Rosa Rawlings of Branchville and Catherine Ray of New York; three brothers, Aubrey Lashley, Marshal Lashley and James Lashley, all of Branchville; 21 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

James C. Gray

WINDSOR – James Charles &uot;Jimmy&uot; Gray, 49, a native of Cumberland County, died June 23, 2003, at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at The News Light House Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Mike Qualls. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

Gray was a welder and a member of The New Light House Church.

Survivors include his wife, Vickie H. Gray; his daughters, Jamie and Dianna Gray, both of the home; his sisters, Jane Allen of Colerain, Debbie Rodrigus of San Antonio, Texas and Marie DeBois of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; and his brothers, Timmy Gray of the home and William &uot;Billy&uot; Gray of Conway.

Robert L. Cooper Jr.

HARRELLSVILLE – Robert Lee Cooper Jr., 71, a native of Macon, Ga., died June 21, 2003, at Three Rivers Nursing Home.

A funeral was conducted Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Lewis. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.

Cooper was a retired construction worker. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Annie Cherry Cooper; two daughters, Marion Cooper and Cynthia McCoy of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Marilyn Cheesboro, Carol Martinez and Lugenia Francis; and 16 grandchildren.

Elsie B. Beverly

LEWISTON WOODVILLE – Elsie Bazemore Beverly, 93, a native of Bertie County, died June 25, 2003, at Gretna Health Care Center, Gretan, Va. She was the widow of S.F. Beverly.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. James Baughn. Burial will be in the Hoggard Memorial Cemetery, Lewiston Woodville. Memorial donations may be made to Lewiston Woodville Rescue Squad, Church St., Lewiston Woodville, NC 27849. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, June 7, 2003, prior to services.

Mrs. Beverly was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist of Lewiston Woodville.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean Beverly Byrd of Gretna; four grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
