AHOSKIE – Ahoskie Post 102 beat Edenton Post 40 11-1 in a Junior American Legion game here Friday night.

Ahoskie opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first frame.

Ryan Weaver and Bryan Merritt drew walks and both advanced on a wild pitch. Weaver scored on an Eric Ortiz RBI-single. Merritt then scored on a Brandon Terry RBI-groundout to make it 2-0.

Ortiz took third on Terry’s groundout and then scored on an Ackerman Grace RBI-groundout to give Post 102 a 3-0 advantage.

Edenton closed the gap to 3-1 in the top of the second, but Ahoskie added another four runs in the bottom of the second stanza.

Tyler Jones started things with a single to right followed by a single to left by Austin Hurdle. Jones was thrown out at third on an A.J. Liverman fielder’s choice.

Hurdle came around to score on a Weaver RBI-single to left. Liverman moved to third on a Merritt fielder’s choice which erased Weaver at second.

Liverman then scored on a wild pitch before Merritt stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Ortiz followed by drawing a walk and promptly stealing second. Both runners scored on a Terry two-run single to make it 7-1.

Post 102 then plated two more runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Tyler Small and Jones had singles and advanced on a Liverman groundout. Both runners scored when Weaver singled to make it 9-1.

Ahoskie added another run in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Ortiz walked, stole second and scored on an Everette Sawyer RBI-single to give Post 102 to a 10-1 lead.

The final run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jahleel Fleetwood walked, stole second and scored on a Weaver RBI-single that ended the game.

Ortiz pitched five innings for the win. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out two.

Post 102 combined for 11 hits led by Weaver who had three hits and four RBIs. Small and Jones recorded two hits each while Terry had one hit and three RBIs.

“We hit the ball well tonight,” Post 102 skipper Brandon Matthews said. “We got a great pitching effort from Eric Ortiz. This was a good conference win.”

Ahoskie is now 6-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. They will play at Windsor at 7 p.m. Wednesday and return home for a 7 p.m. game Friday with Edenton.
