Harold Veazey

Harold Glenn Veazey, age 101, of the 900 block of Academy St, passed away Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at his home.
Mr. Veazey was born December 7, 1908, in Granville County, the eldest child of the late Kinchen Otley Veazey Sr. and Ocena Elizabeth Veazey. He was married to Mary Haskins of Stem, N.C. in 1938, and she preceded him in death on January 24, 1989.
Harold was owner, operator of Basnight Tobacco Warehouse in Ahoskie. He was also part owner of a warehouse in Douglas, GA, and managed Growers Co-Op Tobacco Warehouse in Johnson City, Tenn. As a young man he traveled to Canada to help cure tobacco.
Harold was an avid golfer, member of the Southern Golf Association and a founding member of Beechwood Country Club in Ahoskie. He was a long time member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church.
Mr. Veazey was preceded in death by brothers, Hubert, Elmo, and Luke Veazey and sisters Imogene Whitfield and Katie Bullock and nephew Steve Bullock. He is survived by brother, K.O. Veazey Jr. and wife Lou Ellen, and sister-in-law Leila Veazey of Durham. He is also survived by nephews Otley and Doug Veazey, and Larry Bullock; and nieces Jean Watkins, Bonnie Suggs, Betty Laws, Linda Duda, Beth Pleasant and Laura Wilmer.
A private burial will be held at Ahoskie Cemetery, followed by a memorial service on Friday, March 5, 2010, at Ahoskie United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. The family will meet with friends following the service.
