Joyce Phelps Horton, 70, of West Mulberry Street, Winton, died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 in Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.
Mrs. Horton was born in Bertie County and was the daughter of the late Russell V., Sr. and Sadie McKeel Phelps. A retired optical assistant with Roanoke-Chowan Eye Care, she was a member of Winton Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Russell V. Phelps, Jr.
Joyce was a devoted wife to her husband of 47 years, Edward Lee Horton. Also surviving are her loving daughters, Susan James and husband, Bobby, of Mt. Olive, Sandra Newsome and husband, Tim, of Winton, and Sharon Conner and husband, Marty, of Harvest, AL; her five adoring grandsons, Bryce, Tim, Taylor, Evan, and Garrett; her sister, Margaret Langdale of Kinston; and four nieces, Ann Wilson, Ellen Riddick, Marie Miller and Linda Cox.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Winton Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Futrell and Dr. Charles Harris. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, handling arrangements.
